Gold and Silver awards for the best inventions of the year at the exhibition INNOVATE SRI LANKA 2019 were won for exhibits designed by the students and the staff of the Faculty of Engineering.<\/p>\n

The Best Invention of the Year \u2013 Gold Award was won by the team that includes 3 students from the Faculty of Engineering \u2013 Dileesha Jayathilake, Shashika Gunawardana, Nuwan Jayaweera and 1 student from the Faculty of Medical Sciences \u2013 J.A.L.J. Silva with the guidance of the staff members \u2013 Dr. P.M.T. Bandara and Mr. Tharaka Bandara from the Faculty of Engineering. The team won the Gold award in recognition of the invention \u2018BED TO TROLLEY TRANSFER METHOD FOR THE SICK AND DISABLED\u2019. The product was an idea of Dileesha Jayathilake and designed for transferring patients with a heightened sensitivity to pain caused during motion. The product can be operated by a single person and a smooth transfer of the patient can be achieved. The inventors were also awarded the 1st prize in the Biomedical and Health Services category.<\/p>\n

The Second-Best Invention of the Year \u2013 Silver Award was won by the team that includes 5 students from the Faculty of Engineering \u2013 Nishan Auranga, Chathura Buddhika, Prathap Jayasooriya, Gihan Jayarathna, Tharindu Sathischandra with the guidance of the staff members \u2013 Dr. Dulini Mudunkotuwa and Mr. Yasun Ratiyala from the Faculty of Engineering. The team won the Silver award in recognition of the invention \u2018A HYBRID SYSTEM FOR GEAR SHIFTING IN BICYCLES\u2019. The invention was a system of components that could be integrated to any ordinary bicycle converting its manual gear shifting mechanism to a smart hybrid system. The invention would increase rider efficiency and would lead to a more comfortable ride. The team also won the 1st prize in the Robotics and Embedded Systems category.<\/p>\n

Many other teams from the Faculty of Engineering won Special Recognition awards at INNOVATE SRI LANKA 2019 exhibition. It was indeed a proud moment for one of the youngest faculties of the University.<\/p>\n
