Ms. Umaya Bhashini Balagalla obtained her B.Sc.(Hons) Degree in Biomedical Engineering with a second class upper division in 2016 from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. Soon after completing her undergraduate studies, she was recruited as an Instructor in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. To start her graduate studies, she joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2017 as a Demonstrator. Since 2018, she has been working in the same department as a lecturer while conducting her graduate studies research work.

Detection and Classification of Breast Cancer Lesions in Mammography Images.
Supervising a group of final year undergraduates of Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. The main objective of this research project is to detect breast cancer lesions in mammography images of dense breasts using deep learning algorithms.

Cardio-X
Supervised a group of undergraduates of Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in developing a pre-heart attack detector. This system is incorporated to a Mobile App, captures ECG in real-time, analyzes them using deep learning algorithms and predicts heart attacks.
Won the title “Undergraduate Inventor of the Year (UIY) 2022” and “Best Market Viable Product” at the competition UIY 2022 organized by IESL, Sri Lanka.
