Department History

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is one of the prestigious state Universities of Sri Lanka with an origin that dates back to 1873. With the aim of producing knowledgeable, competent, confident, and innovative engineering graduates, the curriculum offered at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has been carefully designed in collaboration with distinguished professionals from both academic and industry sectors to comply with the international standards for engineering programs, such as the Washington Accord of the International Engineering Alliance.

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the founding departments which was established along with the faculty of Engineering in January 2016 under the leadership of the former Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor Samapath Amaratunge.

In January 2016, Dr. KMC Konthesingha assumed duties as the founding Head of the Department. With his vision to make the department an academic center of excellence which prospers the lives of all fellow beings through the application of Civil Engineering knowledge, the department has come a long way in terms of international and local achievement, with the undergraduates winning many competitions with their innovative thinking, outstanding skills and remarkably effective use of resources within the department. Despite being established a few years ago and operating at a temporary premises currently, our infrastructure facilities such as laboratories have improved substantially to cater to the needs of the current and future students.

Presently, the department has the full-time service of many lectures including several prominent senior lectures with illustrious careers in Civil engineering education in Sri Lanka, making it one of the outstanding departments within the Faculty of Engineering. Besides, the department has already commenced its postgraduate research degree programs (M.Phil./Ph.D.).
