International Research Group on good practices design guidelines for Traffic calming

The department of Civil Engineering has established an international research group named “International Research Group on good practices design guidelines for Traffic calming devices adopted in Eastern Asian countries” in the year 2020. Researchers from eight universities belonging to Sri Lanka, Japan, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Malaysia have established this group to share the international best practices of traffic calming and develop design guidelines in the area. This research group has been registered under the International Research Group scheme (IRG-41-2020)  of East Asian Society of Transport Studies (EASTS).

Purpose of establishing the group is as follows

  1. Establish an international research group on studies related to traffic calming.
  2. To develop solutions for traffic calming that are applicable to Sri Lanka and other East Asian countries by incorporating the traffic characteristics.
  3. To disseminate the knowledge among other stakeholders dealing with traffic calming by way of printed and electronic publications and knowledge sharing workshops, sessions during EASTS conference to other

In order to achieve these the group aspires to conduct research along below aspects

  • Objective A: Comprehensive review on existing traffic calming measures (types, profile and other details, costs, warrants and process of introducing devices) of Eastern Asia, barriers and supporters for this
  • Objective B: Evaluate the effectiveness of existing types for calming devices based on empirical observations from different countries
  • Objective C: Develop guidelines design lines for effective traffic calming devices based on systematic empirical studies (profiles, material, location, external factors)
