It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Being the youngest engineering faculty of the state university sector, great potential lies ahead of us to contribute to the development of our country, by preparing young graduate engineers who will be the foundation engineers. Following the vision of the university “Prosper lives through education” the department intends to train a set of young graduates who are equipped with basic knowledge in civil engineering, and other relevant knowledge and able to solve open-ended problems presented to them.
At present department has given prime focus to its undergraduate program leading to the award of the four-year degree in Bachelor of the Science of Engineering specialized in Civil Engineering.
For this purpose, the department in collaboration with the faculty and the participation of industry experts and fellow academics have prepared the undergraduate work to meet the national and international requirements in engineering education. In delivering prime focus is given to deliver the program satisfying the Outcome Based Education for engineering. The department is following the requirements for the Washington accord and is in the path of applying for recognition status under the Washington Accord for Engineers from the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka.
While the degree program has ensured the basic credit requirement of a graduate civil engineer, students have the option of specializing further in the areas of demand. At present the subjects related to Structural Engineering minor is being offered. In future students may be able to work towards minors in Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering or any other minor based on industrial demand.
In order to deliver the above curriculum, the department is well equipped with a team of dynamic and qualified staff members. At the moment, we have one Professor, five Senior Lecturers and four Lecturers. Presently, the department has 88 students from three batches.
While paying due attention to the undergraduate program, the department is actively involved in research activities. The academic staff members are continuing their research work with the involvement of the industry. With the collaboration of the Faculty of postgraduate studies, the department has begun to offer M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees by research. At present, three students are pursuing their post-graduate work under this category.
Department has active collaboration with the industry and universities through which joint research activities and other collaborative work is conducted.
We are in our initial inception. However, the department is excited and positive about the future to unveil. Therefore, the department invites you to be a part of this journey ahead.
