Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
As one of the newest additions to the state university engineering community, our department stands at a unique point in its journey — full of promise, energy, and vision. We are driven by the mission to educate a new generation of civil engineers who will take the lead in shaping Sri Lanka’s infrastructure, sustainability, and development.
In alignment with the University’s vision, “Prosper lives through education,” we strive to provide an academic environment that blends sound engineering fundamentals with innovation and creativity. Our goal is to produce graduates who not only possess strong technical knowledge but are also equipped with analytical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills essential to modern engineering practice.
The Bachelor of the Science of Engineering Honours in Civil Engineering degree offered by the department has been designed to meet both local and international academic standards. The curriculum has been developed through collaboration between the faculty, industry experts, and academic professionals, ensuring that it reflects the current and future needs of the engineering profession. The program follows Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles and aligns with the standards of the Washington Accord, paving the way for international recognition through the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL).
Students are encouraged to explore their interests within civil engineering through specialized study areas. Currently, a minor in Structural Engineering is offered, while future programs in Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and other fields are being developed to meet emerging industry demands.
Our strength lies in our people, a dedicated academic team comprising one Professor, four Senior Lecturers, and five Lecturers, all committed to academic excellence and research. At present, we proudly guide more than a hundred undergraduate students across three batches, fostering a close-knit and supportive learning environment.
Beyond undergraduate education, the department actively promotes research and postgraduate education in collaboration with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and industry partners. Our academic staff are engaged in impactful research, and the department currently supervises M.Phil. and Ph.D. candidates working on advanced civil engineering topics.
Although we are a young department, our vision is bold. We are determined to grow into a centre of excellence in civil engineering education and research, a place where ideas meet innovation, and learning meets real-world application.
