Exploring the Intersection of History, Engineering, and Culture in Anuradhapura

Department of Interdisciplinary Studies deliver several courses on Humanities during the undergraduate program. “Sri Lankan History and Culture” is one of them where students study the evolution of engineering techniques and technologies through out the ancient civilizations of Sri Lanka.

Anuradhapura is one of the major ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka which prevailed over 1000 years. The city is still rich with many archeological sources that witness the ancient engineering technology. To explore the intersection of ancient engineering technologies and the culture; the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies organized a field visit to the ancient city of Anuradhapura with the help of Prof. Gamini Ranasinghe and the Central Cultural Fund of Sri Lanka. Academic and academic support staff of the department participated in the visit.

As a result of the visit several research gaps were identified for further study. Also, possible improvements to the course curriculum were identified such that students can be much familiar with the ancient engineering technology and the culture of Sri Lanka.
